In 1720 in Paris, near the banks of the Seine, apothecary Charles Laclef sold pigments alongside spices in his small shop. When the painter Jean-Siméon Chardin, who lived above the shop, entrusted him with grinding his paints, the story of Lefranc Bourgeois began.

In 1753, Laclef became the official paint supplier to the Palace of Versailles. In the 19th century, his descendant Alexandre Lefranc developed the paint tube with a screw cap. This innovation allowed artists to take their work outdoors and contributed to the rise of Impressionism.
